Are you a Social Interventionist?

Do you have some hunches about social change that seem crazy and powerful?

Do you smuggle ideas from unlikely places into your work? After your last trip to the acupuncturist did you suddenly know exactly where you need to poke your neighborhood to relieve its pain and speed its healing?

Are you just as likely to gain wisdom from a folktale or a myth as from the latest manual for change?

Do you season your work with metaphor, pop culture and a keen awareness of space?

Are you ready to stand up for the importance of play, music, irony and delight in social justice work?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, we strongly advise that you join this conversation.

folklore and play

Hey everyone,

I was trained as an engineer, and then realized that while I had learned all about how to design systems, I didn't know how to make practical things. I also found myself in the middle of weapons, hostile rhetoric, and not enough love and play for my liking (there were good things too, but it just didn't suit me).

Over time, I found that the description you gave in this blog entry started to fit me more and more. I have found lots of books that are really interesting to read (like "tools for conviviality" or "the continuum concept" and SO many more), that no one at any of my schools ever told me about.

Nowadays I am involved in social interventions, and I like the idea of trying to stay positive... less reactionary. I like to include play in my designs, and I respect folklore and underground networks way more than institutions.

I just thought I'd share a little glimpse of my story for others who are out there that might be wondering about this kind of work. To those people, good luck, you can do anything you dream of with your life.
